Food Article

Hakarl is a traditional Icelandic dish made from the meat of the Greenland shark. The dish has a strong, pungent odor, and its taste is often described as ammonia-like. The preparation of hakarl involves several steps to make the meat edible.

History:
Hakarl has been a part of Icelandic cuisine for several centuries. Medieval Icelanders discovered that the meat of the Greenland shark, a common species in the surrounding waters, was toxic due to the high concentration of urea and trimethylamine oxide in its tissues. To make the meat edible, they developed a process that involved fermenting and drying the meat for several months.

Preparation:
To prepare hakarl, the meat is first cut into large pieces and buried in the ground for up to four months, allowing it to ferment and break down the toxic compounds. After removing the meat from the ground, it is then cut into smaller pieces and hung to dry for several months.

How to eat it:
Hakarl is traditionally served in small cubes accompanied by a shot of Icelandic schnapps, called Brennivin, which is also known as “Black Death.” The schnapps is used to mask the strong flavor of the hakarl. To eat hakarl, you should hold a small cube with your fingers, then swallow it whole without chewing. Chewing hakarl can release the strong aroma and make it more difficult to eat.

In recent years, there is a growing concern among marine conservationists about the potential impacts of shark fishing on the sustainability of shark populations. As a result, some Icelandic restaurants have replaced hakarl with alternatives like cod or salmon in their menus.

Work Immersion Reflection

Work immersion is a topic that allows senior highschool students to get their hands dirty and experience a job that is matched to their tracks so they may have an idea about their future vocations. It is one of the prerequisites to be qualified as one of the graduates in senior highschool.

I had the opportunity to teach, complete office tasks, and conduct paperwork during my work immersion. I loved teaching, but because I’m a shy person, I felt really ashamed at the same time. However, I enjoy working in the office and on paperwork since our supervisors are good at guiding us and are eager to share their experience with us.

Due to my work immersion experience, where I observed how busy and responsible teachers are, I have come to the realization that their job is not simple. However, teaching is a wonderful profession since it allows you to impart your knowledge and experiences to the students you are working with.

All of the knowledge I have acquired via my job immersion has been useful, especially as I approach graduation. I’m confident I’ll put it to use in my day-to-day activities.

Recollection Reflection

We had our class recollection on May 23, 2023 at Mater Dolorosa Passionist Novitiate, located at Kawas Sarangi Province. We shared about our problems, experienced, good sides and bad sides, which helped us to know more about our classmates. We wrote a letter for our parents and gave it to them when we arrived home. We cried, laugh and enjoyed that day, it is one of my unforgettable moment in my life.

I realized that it is important tell our parents and friends how we much value and love them, because not every smile is genuine, some has a hidden pain and sorrow. We should value and treasure every moment we spend with them.
